MY JUNK
(INSTAGRAM'S LOST FEATURE)
2024
In this project, I was asked to find a flaw or limitation in an existing digital product and design a solution around it. While reviewing Instagram, I noticed a significant issue: users are constantly exposed to content they didn’t ask to see and have very limited control over what appears in their feed.
Although the app offers options like reporting or muting, it doesn’t allow users to proactively filter categories of content they don’t want to encounter. This leads to unwanted exposure, possibly to sensitive or emotionally triggering subjects.
To address this, I designed a feature called “My Junk.”
This feature gives users the ability to filter out content based on topics, themes, or specific triggers they want to avoid. Instagram automatically identifies and classifies posts, while users can decide which categories should be blocked or hidden in advance.

Prevent unwanted exposure by allowing users to filter and block content categories according to their personal preferences.

User Testing Script
You’re getting married in two months, and lately Instagram keeps showing tempting posts of delicious, but very unhealthy, food.
You’re trying to stay in shape until the wedding, so you don’t want to be exposed to this kind of content anymore.
Luckily, Instagram now allows you to filter it using the “My Junk” feature.
You decide to remove “junk food” content from your feed so you won’t be tempted until the wedding. Later, you want to show your partner how the feature works, and where all the filtered posts go. Either through your profile activity page or through the filtering menu on the right side.
